China Institute has a large new facility. It needs to expand its programming and support base to take advantage of this, in a cost-effective manner.

Nonprofit: China Institute

Founded in 1926, China Institute is the oldest US cultural organization focused on deepening understanding of China through art, culture, education and business. At the Institute’s headquarters in Lower Manhattan China Institute presents:

  • Chinese language classes for all ages.
  • Professional development/DOE certification for US teachers of Chinese
  • Museum quality Art exhibitions with an affiliated education program
  • Public programs (talks, film screenings, performances, family festivals) exploring Chinese culture and cuisine
  • Business programs that provide insights on the business landscape in both countries.

Project: Strategic Growth Plan

China Institute (CI) has quadrupled its floor space. Much of the addition is devoted to classrooms and programmable space, but is often underutilized. CI wants to increase programming in a sustainable manner. CI achieved a break-even budget during COVID, and can not return to operational deficits.

  • Decide on new and increased programming
  • Identify steps needed to complete this (staff, funding, etc.)
  • Maintain cost discipline so this increase is sustainable
